The healthy aversion to antidepressants and the wisdom behind it

It is no coincidence that a large number of people have a strong aversion to antidepressants when they are presented to them on a silver platter. This aversion is not to be misunderstood as a refusal to cooperate in the healing process on the part of the client/patient, but needs to be understood as radical and profound wisdom within their own system.

It is as though something deep inside of them knows that antidepressants are not the way out of the situation they are in. Even if we cannot comprehend this wisdom with the very limited grasp of our thinking minds, it is the same intelligence that keeps us away from walking around dodgy corners alone at night. It is the same intelligence that signals to us which people are good for us and whose intentions are not pure. It is the same intelligence that communicates to us in every moment. It speaks through feelings rather than rational thinking. It sends subtle signals, so that in every moment, we know which way to go, which step to take next, when to say yes and when it is a small yet firm no. It is as simple as that, if something feels right, we go for it and if something feels off, we ought not to. This is our connection to source. It is our guidance and compass and highest asset. If we miss or even refuse to listen to it we have to bear the consequences.

So instead of indoctrinating people with the idea that antidepressants are the only option for them, we can become curious about the wisdom that speaks to them in their own system. That is the true authority. And beginning to work with that rather than against it will ultimately step by step reveal the path that is best suited to their individual and unique (healing) journey.

We as human beings are incomparable, each and every one of us experiencing the world in our very unique ways and through our own hearts. There is no one size fits all. While traditional psychotherapy might work for someone, it might be utterly ill-suited for another.

The oftentimes so clear and strong aversion to antidepressants that people have needs to be honoured. An individual who has the ability to precisely feel what is not for them is already in such a powerful place. It is paramount that we as their temporary companions, mentors, coaches, spiritual advisors and therapists step in here and help them to strengthen the connection to their own truth and to the innate wisdom in them for that is the place where the answers will reveal themselves. And together we can find options that feel more aligned for them. We can support them with truly and fully embracing and processing their emotions, if they wish to do so.

Learning to process all emotions in fact is THE antidote to antidepressants. When we understand the importance and necessity of allowing all emotions to be felt, all bodily sensations to be noticed, all accompanying thoughts and beliefs in the mind to be seen, we eventually open ourselves up to true healing. It is as though this process is already well know by the higher intelligence. Why else would it steer us away from the pills if it didn’t already know the way out for us?

Lana
